Pattaya, Thailand, is a renowned international holiday destination. Originally popularized by the armed forces as an R&R (rest and recreation) destination in the early 19???, Pattaya began its transformation from a quiet seaside fishing town into one of Southeast Asia’s most popular vacation hotspots.
Understanding Pattaya
Pattaya is located less than 1.5 hours down the east coast from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. The city is divided into four main areas:
- Central Pattaya
- North Pattaya (also known as Naklua)
- South Pattaya
- East Pattaya (often called The Darkside—a name originating from the lack of street lighting during the city’s early expansion).
Pattaya is immediately connected to Jomtien via Big Buddha Hill (officially named Pratumnak Hill) and is approximately 30–40 minutes from Sattahip and Samaesan.
